There are so many common resume mistakes job seekers seem to overlook. It is important to understand that, during a job search, your resume is the most important document needed. Many employers will request a resume before deciding if they would like to interview you or pass on your application. Beware of these very common resume mistakes that are super easy to correct!
The most common mistake people make is making their resume too long. On a daily basis, when I look at resumes, I often see verbose sentences or big paragraphs underneath the job title. Resumes are only looked at for a minute or less. So, you want to be as brief and concise as possible.
Additionally, resumes should not be any longer than two typed pages. Try to avoid adding all jobs you’ve held. Instead, only include jobs that pertain to the position you are seeking. You should only highlight the last ten years of your career in the resume. This is the most relevant information to your current job search.
Another common mistake is to use a font that is difficult to read. Fancy typesetting may look pretty, but it can be hard to read. If the recruiter cannot read the resume easily, he or she may put it to the side and move on to the next resume in the pile. Use a basic font like Times New Roman or Arial Narrow.
Also, proofread your work! This is a frequently overlooked resume MUST. Many job seekers are so eager to send out resumes. However, carefully checking for typos or grammatical errors is essential. Presenting a resume with misspelled words and improper grammar will get you thrown out of the running in no time at all.
