Additionally, a good rule of thumb for those just entering the work world is to use a functional format for the resume. A functional format highlights your transferable skills. It also downplays your lack of work experience. Skills are listed on top. Also, highlighted are characteristics that would make you an ideal employee. For example, if you are applying to be a teacher’s aide, you may want to say you are a patient individual. Or, for an assistant editor job, you can state that you are detail oriented.
No matter the style you choose, make sure it plays to your strengths and shows you in the best possible light. Ask recruiters and other job professionals how your resume comes across. See if they suggest improvements that can be made.
