President & CEO
You’ve sent out your resume and the company of your dreams has requested an interview. In your mind, you’ve already landed the job! But be careful. Don’t fall into these common interview pitfalls that can put you on the sidelines and cost you the job!
The most important thing is to show up on time for your appointment. You have no idea how much lateness can hurt your chances. Yes, trains get delayed. Things sometimes happen that are out of our control. But it is important that you factor in the unexpected. For example, be sure to allow extra time for travel.
Wear attire that is appropriate for the interview. If it is a law firm, professional attire would include a business suit in a dark color. If in doubt about the attire required, you should be dressed more formally.
Do not talk too much on the interview. Allow the person who is interviewing you to get his or her questions answered. At the end of the session, they will usually inquire if you have any questions. This is your cue to ask.
Speak favorably about past employers and employment experiences. If you have nothing nice to say, just keep it as brief and professional as possible. Otherwise, present employers will wonder if you have issues getting along with managers and co-workers.
Finally, be aware of your body language on the interview. Sometimes nerves get the best of us and we forget to make eye contact or sit up straight. Speak clearly and audibly so the interviewer doesn’t have to strain to hear.
By following these simple interviewing tips, you have the best possible chance of getting selected. A good interview impression can go a long way!
