President & CEO
Many people feel that holiday season job hunting is not such a good idea. In fact, many may consider it pointless. The holiday season is one of the most hectic times during the year. Who wants the additional stress of looking for a job when it seems as if there’s barely any time to get ready for the holidays?! On the contrary, it can be the best time to search for employment and land something great for many reasons.
During this season, companies are always looking to hire new staff. Many employees go on break and take vacation during this time of year, leaving their place of employment in need of coverage. That’s why there is always a spike in temporary and seasonal jobs at this time. Oh, but do not fret over those ever so fearful titles of “temp” or “seasonal.” Many times, if you put your best foot forward, these positions can transition into a permanent role.
On the same note, since many people are so focused on actually enjoying the holidays rather than thinking about work, there is less competition during your holiday season job hunting. Many figure, “Hey! There’s only a couple of months left in the year. Why not spend them traveling and enjoying the time with friends and family?! I’ll just wait until after the new year to look for work!” Thus, the less applicants there are around to interview, the more available the jobs become. Certain positions that you may have had a hard time landing an interview for earlier in the year, may become easier to land because the pool of candidates is less competitive.
And, what’s better than having no completion?! Holiday parties! No, not because of the free food and drinks, but because of the opportunity to network! Holiday parties allow you to socialize and rub shoulders with fellow colleagues with whom you would not normally have the chance to interact. This includes the top Executives and Managers of the company who just may be able to help you advance in your career. It’s the season of giving! People are usually in a good, jovial mood this time of year and willing to help in whatever way they can.
Finally, who doesn’t love extra cash during the holiday season?! With your chances of finding a job increasing during this time of year, your wallet and bank account may see those much needed “greens” and would look a little less hurt at the end of the year. Plus, the peace of mind of knowing that you have a steady income once those bills start rolling in at the end of January is priceless!
