President & CEO
As a job seeker, you may have realized that it has become quite difficult in getting any sort of response on your resume, especially in today’s competitive market. The lack of response may not necessarily correlate with your experience, or the lack thereof, for the position. Often times, it is related to your resume as a whole. You want to make sure that your resume puts you in your best light. Additionally, you want to ensure that it makes you come across as the most fresh and competent candidate for the job. Here are a few things to consider when undergoing a resume makeover.
There is no need for you to list every job you ever held. What you want to do is list the positions that are relevant and related to the job you are currently pursuing. Keep it to 10 years, 15 tops! Make sure to highlight and emphasize the most recent and applicable jobs.
You resume should always be tailored to the position or field of interest. You want to make sure that it is as concise and straight-to-the-point as possible without sacrificing the value of your skills and qualifications. Therefore, make sure to add the proper phrasing and the right key words that are central to the position and/or industry to which you are applying. Remember, you only have about 6-10 seconds to “wow” your potential employer, so make pop.
A rule of thumb to consider when going through a resume makeover: your resume should be kept to one page, unless your position and field of expertise calls for more. I am sure there is a lot you’d like to express about your skills and qualifications. But, going back to tip 2, keep it short and simple. Make sure to get in those key words, and avoid being repetitive.
Nowadays, you no longer have to list your mailing address at the top of your resume. In fact, listing your full mailing address may make you come across as old and outdated. All you need to include is your name, phone number, and email address. Also, make sure that your email address comes from a current service provider. Using a dated provider like AOL is now a thing of the past.
There should be none! This line is completely obsolete. Instead, include a brief professional summary that emphasizes your strengths and abilities and details why you are the ideal candidate for the position.
