Build your brand!
This is something we hear very often in businesses. But what exactly does it mean to build your brand? Each of us has our own unique identity whether we are aware of it or not. These characteristics form the way we are thought of by family, friends and people in the business world.
Whether you are seeking an administrative assistant position, receptionist gig or an office manager job it, is important to brand yourself in the staffing world, rather than letting others define you. By creating your own unique job market identity you can have the power to control your career path. Here are some easy steps to follow to build your brand in the administrative career path:
Think about the things you do well and the areas that you hope to be thought of as an expert. Are you an organized administrative assistant? A reliable receptionist? A talented office manager? Do you have excellent communication skills? Once you understand what you hope to be perceived as, you can start working towards those career goals.
Be careful about what you post online and be sure it is consistent with your brand. If your employment goal is to be a permanent office assistant be sure to be professional in all your online postings.
Associate your brand with others who have developed strong brands such as your school or employer. This connection strengthens you in the eyes of the workplace. Consider writing a guest blog for the company newsletter or volunteer at your former school to mentor students.
Always find ways to add value to whatever you do. This helps to boost you in your job search or career path. Negative posts or comments to others are not helpful in achieving your brand. Positivity and upbeat attitudes attract the right attention.
Finally, remember that a good brand is always evolving. Never be afraid to reinvent yourself. In the job market it’s ok to switch jobs from a paralegal to an office administrator because the transferable skill set is the same. You bring your core assets with you, such as reliability, good communication skills and financial savvy. It is up to you to decide what your brand should be. As long as it’s authentic, you can create your own destiny.
